At a young age, Michael A. Montoya was one of the best amateur boxers in the country, a 4 time Golden Gloves Champion and qualified for the 1984 US Olympic Trials. During his boxing career that spanned 15 plus years,
he had over 250 fights.
He comes from a family legacy of boxing, as his father Jesse A. Montoya began fighting in 1957. All of Michael's brothers and sister all boxed. Now, Michael is integral to the mission of Montoya Boxing Gym (YDP), mentoring local inner-city children via youth programs built around boxing, and helping people of all ages enjoy the sport. Additionally, Coach Michael offers personal one-on-one training, along with group boxing fitness classes.
Michael is often sought out for his expertise on the sport of boxing, commentating, event coordinating, business development and stance consulting. He has worked and trained with Olympian boxers and World champions. Michael manages and trains professional and world ranked boxers, and many are alumni of his programming.
As an industry advocate, Michael has represented the sport of boxing before legislators and commissions. He holds or has held licenses in Texas, Nevada, California, Oklahoma, New York, Florida and Puerto Rico.
Each Fall and Spring semester, Coach Michael can be found weekly on the campus of Southern Methodist University teaching Boxing 101: The Sweet Science. Most recently, Michael was the GM & VP of the Dallas Enforcers, a Dallas local sports team in the newly formed professional boxing league that consisted of 12 teams across the nation.
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Michael has served on several local non-profit boards and held several civic appointments. A proud resident of East Dallas, Michael calls St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church his spiritual home. Even though you can find boxing in his DNA, Michael also maintains a strong commitment to his faith, his family & his future.
